Mix TapesLOCATION: Sunrise Surf Shop, JACKSONVILLE BEACHYEAR: 1994TAGS: rapPUBLISHED: January 18, 2008I am such a sissy. This is my rap memory. But when this album came out and was introduced to me by my friend Tony, I just thought this was so unbelievably cool. Edgy, controversial, and a little white girl like me could listen and feel like I was being fresh. (HA!)
I worked at the local surf shop and one of the nicer things our boss did for us was when he bought a good stereo, tape deck, and eventually a 5-disc cd changer for us to listen to music on throughout the store. Tony and I argued repeatedly about what was better, listening to the better quality sound of an entire cd, or an awesome mix tape. This was was before the idea of burning a cd with a variety of tracks was even imaginable. Tony made mix tapes for everyone, there was always a Beastie Boys track on there...always. I dont't think either one of us ever won the argument. Honestly, Tony's probably right. There is nothing better than a good mix tape. Ill Communication was a genius album in itself, another one of those in my opinion you listen to from start to finish, pieces just don't sound right. When this video came out on MTV I loved the guys dressed up as cops/detectives, in those silly suits, wigs, and mustaches. Hilarious.
