A Father's TaleLOCATION: Anywhere , SeattleYEAR: 2008TAGS: Parenting, Father, Dad, DivorcePUBLISHED: June 7, 2008I've always been a Sting fan, growing up I loved The Police, I was discovering Miles Davis about the same time his first solo record hit the stores. It was an awakening. but maybe I'll write about that a different time. Over the years I didn't follow him as closely, I didn't buy all the albums. We grew up and apart. Anyway, I've always been fascinated by song titles, and this one caught my eye. In fact I'd say I was aware of the title for several years before I heard the song. Each time I hear it now, it rips me apart. I'm a statistic. One half of a broken marriage. A weekend father. Of course I'm better off now, I'm was the leaver- I had to do it for me to survive. But the reality of it all is that like he says in the song "What can a father do but babysit sometimes?" Try as we might, we're left being weekend fathers. People don't understand unless they experience it. I hear this song. It touches me. It reminds me of what I am. I find comfort in knowing that I am not alone. I love my kids. I am happy. I am almost whole.
