supergirl | MEMORY FROM 2004

A final dance

My father died unexpectedly in 1992 at the age of 46. The doctors said it was a heart attack. We suspected negligence.

Life went on. We, barely teenagers then, grew up quickly. The grief and shock remained unresolved.

One day, Oprah Winfrey featured Luther Vandross on her show and he sang this beautiful, beautiful song he had written called 'Dance with my father'. That brought buckets of tears.

I remember once posting the lyrics to the song on my blog. It was my dad's anniversary and I wanted to remember him, to remind myself of all the things we could have done, but didn't, because he died so suddenly. A lot of my blog readers wrote in talking about their own parents, so it ended up being a special post for many people.

Vandross died suddenly in 2005. I'll always be grateful that he wrote this song. It reminds me never to take things for granted.  Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Listen to the song here. Not the original video, but the song is pure Vandross.
