Love, JanisLOCATION: Alley Theater, HoustonYEAR: 2007TAGS: Theater, OverdosePUBLISHED: February 9, 2008Whoa....I just saw an amazing play - really a rock concert - called, you guessed it, Love, Janis. It's a two person-play....a woman who plays the "speaking" Janis who essentially reads from her own letters she wrote home from San Francisco, and a woman who plays the "singing" Janis who is backed by a full band and who performs 16 of Joplin's hits live on stage throughout the play as though it was a club show. It's adapted from a book Janis' sister, Laura Joplin wrote that tells the fascinating, short-lived life of her older sister, Janis. It was freaky how much the singing actress sounded like Janis and how tight the band was. They absolutely rocked....didn't hold back at all....and it was funny seeing this "theater" crowd on their feet going wild all night long. I always knew Janis Joplin was talented, but this really drove home the depth of her talent and the tragedy of her early demise...just months after the loss of Hendrix and months before the loss of Morrison. They say bad things come in threes....no kidding for rock music in '70/'71.
