LA StoryLOCATION: On the 405 , Los AngelesYEAR: 1983TAGS: Vacation, The PolicePUBLISHED: April 3, 2008The city of Los Angeles will forever be linked in my mind to The Police and specifially, the song, Every Breath You Take. I made my first trip to LA with my mother and brother the year this album came out and this tune was getting major radio play. And this is LA we're talking about here so like it or not if you want to get around, you're spending a fair amount of time in a car. The stations couldn't get enough of this song and so we heard it pretty much every hour on the hour for the full week we were out there. For some unknown reason, I particularly equate this song to this really cool (at least I thought it was at the time) sleeveless black t-shirt I bought in LA that said Los Angeles in chinese characters. I thought I was hot stuff walking around in Westwood and elsewhere in my cut-off shirt and spiked hair. Everything about that trip and all the things we did and saw....walking around Westwood, the LaBrea Tar Pits, the farmers market, Mann's Chinese Theater, the obligatory tour of the stars homes in Beverly hills, Rodeo Drive, The Santa Monica pier --- on and on --- all of it reminds me of this song...and when I hear this song I am reminded of those places. I've been back to LA countless times since then and still the connection is overpowering. Amazing how a song can do that, uh?
