Freaks in GreeceLOCATION: 1966 VW Bulli (Type 2) , Castania (Peleponnes, Greece)YEAR: 1978TAGS: VW, freak, GreecePUBLISHED: July 22, 2008We few 18 to 20 yo German guys bought that old 1966 Red Coss VW Tpye 2in 1978 to use it as a "freaky" car for a big and long vacation to Greece. The car was in a fair condition we repaired some parts took new tyres and went for a 12.000 km trip through Southern Europe (no breakdowns!). Going by land through the (now former) Republicof Yugoslavia and reached Greece in August 1978. People were friendly, cigarettes, wine, brandy, food and everything was very cheap, so even poor students we were could live a good live. One of us was different, he was a coming scientist (he is a great one today) and he wanted to look at the mountains of the Peleponnes. While the rest of the gang was at the camping ground on the beaches of Nafplio/Nauplia I drove our coming scientist through the heart of the Peleponnes, through dried out river bedsover narrow mountain passes. Best roads were washboard roads. Leaving my friend alone in the mountains and searching my way back to the cost and two days later back into the Peleponnes (no GPS, no Greek speaking, no other cars, just the sun and a worn out map) I listened to that one cassette we had in that cheap cassette playing car radio and that was mainly REO Speedwagon (live) as well as some Peter Frampton and Barclay James Harvest. An outstanding experience!
