I Look Just Like Albert IngallsLOCATION: Home , PennsylvaniaYEAR: 1997TAGS: weezer, buddy holly, mtv, vh1, pennsylvaniaPUBLISHED: March 1, 2008Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to watch MTV (I did anyway, of course), but I was allowed to watch VH1. One day they played Weezer’s Buddy Holly video and I showed it to my dad. I thought he would like the song and the video, but he only liked the video. He said he didn’t like the style, especially the singing. I thought the song was fantastic, reminiscent of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, with the alternative rock sound, which included that beautiful distorted guitar. Over time, I became addicted to distorted guitar; I couldn’t get enough of that sound, and I still can’t. Sure, there was a generation gap, but I wondered about my dad’s reasons for opposing alternative rock, and wished MTV wasn’t such a big deal to him. I wished a lot of things weren’t a big deal. The music video for Buddy Holly parodied classic TV and rock bands, but it also conveyed a genuine envy of simpler, happier days. I watched shows like Little House on the Prairie and sometimes wished I were those kids; even though everybody was dying of a plague or something, I longed for normalcy like they had. My life was too messy, too weird, I had to clean it up, hide the weird. I didn’t tell people that I wasn’t allowed to watch MTV. I didn’t tell them a lot of things. Looking back, I realize that the song/video Buddy Holly also makes fun of that envy of simpler, happier days. I relate to the song even more now.
