But, but... this song's about drugs too!LOCATION: high school , Upstate NYYEAR: 1995TAGS: prom, drugs, high schoolPUBLISHED: April 3, 2008The school year was nearly played out and we were closing in on the tradition-laden prom. Over the PA system one morning in homeroom, they played all of our possible prom theme songs, the only two I can remember are U2's With or Without You and The Beatles' Lucy in the Sky. As a lifelong Beatles fan, I was tremendously excited to hear Lucy as an option, but even I had to admit it was a strange selection and would be lousy to dance to. As the day progressed however, our entire class was abuzz, "But Lucy in the Sky is about... DRUGS! LSD! How can we have that as our prom theme!?" I wanted to scream, knowing the song was about a picture Julian Lennon had drawn of one of his classmates when he was a little thing and had nothing to do wth drugs. Lucy ended up being disqualified after the uproar and With or Without You ended up being selected. I had the biggest laugh to myself, seeing as everyone was so hellbent against the "drug theme," but ended up choosing another song that was said to be about drug use.
