Gator Gods in NaplesLOCATION: Naples, FloridaYEAR: 1985TAGS: Friends, College, Florida, Cars, FoodPUBLISHED: December 21, 2007Back to my undergraduate days at the University of Florida in Gainesville. It's August 1985. My roommate and still best bud Brad (see "Humble Abode" post) and I are driving in his wide open Jeep to Naples, Florida. We made a roadtrip down to his family's place to pick up his stuff and return back to Gainesville before classes started. We were jamming to Steely Dan's Gaucho album on the blistering hot drive and pretty much the whole time on the beach. It was an essential part of our roadtrip. I remember drinking beers on the sand while sitting under the umbrella and just chilling for a couple of days. It was one of those unexpected totally relaxing moments. The gulf was like a gentle giant bathtub. Everything moved slow and simple. Even the mosquitoes were too lazy to bite. The humidity, smell of the water and tasty fish we'd fry up every night from the local market had a calm and comforting feel. I just heard Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters" and all the smells and feel of that trip came rushing back. On the drive home we stopped at Krystal's (a fast food chain that sells sliders). We bought 40 sliders and 2 large chocolate shakes. We decided to see who could eat the most. In the Jeep I ate 12 and exploded into a fountain of burgers, bun and beverage spraying Highway 441 (reference Petty's American Girl). But Brad ate all 20 and polished off the entire shake. He became a God from Naples returning to Gatorland. Go Gators!
