Stealing the Police Chief Sign...

LOCATION: Police Department , Small town Michigan

YEAR: 1995

Many of the police officers I was buddies with in a particular town did NOT like the acting chief of police. He had been canned before, has fallen asleep on the job, and just was a freakin' slob from hell...yet..there he was as an acting chief (soon-to-be chief).

In their parking lot of the department was a sign that said, "Parking for Chief of Police".

On a dare, a friend and I ended up swiping that sucker. Every night on my way to the radio station, I swung through and sprayed the seriously rusted bolts with WD40. And after a week or so, we took the sucker. LOL

After we had it, we drove by one of the gas stations in town and there was a couple of officers in it getting coffee (one whom I was best-buds with). I went in, told him to open his hands, and in I plopped the bolts from the back of the sign. He was like, "DON'T SHOW ME THOSE!!!!!"

Anyway, long story short...this became a huge issue within the department and one of the "dick" cops in their somehow knew it was me and it got back to the Acting Chief. The one guy who I gave the bolts to really was worried at that point that it would end up dragging him in the middle which could cost him his job.

I was told by DICK officer that I really needed to fess up and just go in and take what was coming. Yet, another officer whom I was buddies with told me not to. Since then, I've had my own criminal justice education and had I known then what I know now, I would've told them to get bent..they got their sign back and there was really not a whole hell of a lot they could do and no warrant would be issued for a $5 street sign.

I was conflicted..I was scared....and I didn't know what to do as I DIDN'T have the knowledge. This song REALLY hit home for me with this situation and every single time I hear, I remember this long, dramatic incident.
