The Blue Car

‘That Song’ was one of the many alternative rock one-hit wonders of the 90’s. It was written by a band by the name of ‘Big Wreck’, who most people have never heard of. Fortunately for Erin and I, we were lucky enough to discover this song our sophomore year of high school.  

I met Erin right before I entered into my freshman year of high school and before long, the two of us were inseparable. We both shared a love of 90’s alternative rock and grunge attire, which I think is what brought us together. Erin got her driver’s license sophomore year of high school, which brought us to a whole new level of ‘cool’. Finally, we didn’t have to be seen in the backseat our parent’s cars anymore. Instead, it seemed as though we spent every spare minute of our time driving around town in her little blue Corsica.

Most of the time, we had absolutely no agenda and no destination, but it didn’t matter. As long as we had a good CD in hand, we were set. We’d drive around aimlessly every day for hours. Sometimes we’d pick up local kids that we saw walking around town, and other times we’d drive around, just the two of us, putting our favorite songs on repeat and listening to them over and over again. Erin is probably the only person I know that can listen to the same song 75 times in a row, and then look at me after and say, “One more time?” And of course, I’d nod in agreement and we’d start the song over again.

I kept a diary during my high school days and the majority of it consisted of ‘driving around with the music blaring’ as I worded it. That was heaven to me.

It’s funny because the very first line of ‘That Song’ says, ‘So I always get nostalgic with that song...’ and ironically, that’s exactly how I feel every time I listen to it. It takes me back to the good ole’ high schools days when nothing mattered, except for our daily adventures in the blue car.
