Beating Stone Bridge

LOCATION: Stone Bridge High School , Ashburn, VA

YEAR: 2002

TAGS: basketball, singing, high school

PUBLISHED: April 30, 2008

My senior year I played, well sat the bench really, varsity basketball, and our team was good. The only problem was that our rival team was just a little bit better. Both times we played them during the season, they beat us. So the entire season we were ranked #2, and we hated that fact. After the regular season, each high school was slotted into the playoffs and being #1 and #2, the bracket came down to us playing Stone Bridge for the district title and spot going to regionals. They were ranked #1 so the game was of course at their place. The stands were full of people I didn't know that were cheering one or the other of the Ashburn rivals. The game was the closest of the entire season and came down to the very last few minutes, but we ended up winning the game by 3 points. I didn't play that game but felt just as much like a winner as any other player on my team. I cheered and jumped and yelled as we finally took the title of being #1 from Stone Bridge. The ride home on the bus that night, someone started singing, "We are the Champions," and the rest of the team joined in. Our school was only about a five minute drive from Stone Bridge, so that's the only song we sang on the bus ride home, but it was enough. Man it felt good to beat the Bulldogs in their own house.
