The Music Of Summer CampLOCATION: Camp Hanover , Mechanicsville, VAYEAR: 1997TAGS: teens, campPUBLISHED: May 27, 2008That year, my second at Camp Hanover, was a snapshot of late nineties teen life, down to the slang and the songs that were popular at the time. I was 13. The song currently dominating the top 40 was Backstreet Boys - As Long As You Love Me. Two of the girls in my group, both named Ashley, who I shared a hogan with, were huge Backstreet Boys fans. They went to their concert in Virginia Beach and were best friends outside of camp. I wasnt that much into Backstreet Boys; I preferred Hanson. It was hard not to catch the infectious enthusiasm of the Ashleys. Everywhere they went, they sang the song. Soon we were all singing it. It got to the point where we would burst out in song at any given moment. We drove the boys in our group nuts. On our overnight, we began to sing as we laid out our sleeping bags. The boys groaned and told us to shut up, but we paid no mind. To this day, every single time I hear that song, Camp Hanover 1997 flashes into my mind.
