Bonding With My Stepdad

LOCATION: His Car , Toronto

YEAR: 1996

TAGS: black sabbath, war pigs, paranoid, ozzy

PUBLISHED: April 21, 2008

My parents went through a very rough divorce while I was in my early teens, which was a hard thing to deal with, especially at that age. Though he wasn't yet my stepdad at the time, my mom's new partner wasn't exactly welcome in my opinion. Everything just sort of happened so quickly, and though I was old enough to have understood what was happening, I still wasn't happy about it.

He made a strong effort to bond with me. I was very much into music and heavy metal, and he had a really large music collection of mostly '70s rock on both vinyl and CD. One evening I remember he had picked me up from a friend's house and he had this album playing in his car. While I had looked through his CD collection before, I never found his Black Sabbath albums. I was really surprised that he liked them - I was a huge Sabbath fan already since having a few cassettes I bought years earlier. We really began talking about Sabbath and classic rock, and when we got home he brought out some more of his Black Sabbath albums to show me.

I think that was the first time I really bonded with my stepdad, and thinking back, it's amazing how music can do that.
