Mother MusicLOCATION: Mount Sinai Hospital , New York CityYEAR: 2000TAGS: birth, rain, babyPUBLISHED: May 15, 2008This was the soundtrack to the labor, delivery and birth of my oldest child. She was three weeks early, tiny. It was a rainy and cold June in Manhattan, I could hear the pounding raindrops hitting the air conditioner that blocked my window. But I was so warm with this little person snuggled next to me, both of us trying to figure out how to breastfeed. Everything was so calm and quiet, and this music was like a salve. The musical aspect was a collaborative effort...Shmuel had collected the CDs for the hospital, we were playing them on a Discman loaned to me by Hef in 1994 (sorry!), speakers from Jennifer, and Nanci Griffith from Douglas was somehow the only disc that made it into the CD player on constant replay. Even now, 8 years later, when I hear those songs I am transported to that little room, the smell of her warm head, and the tremendous whole cucumbers that came with my hospital meals.
