Going Back In Time

In the 1980’s I was a huge Psychedelic Furs fan.  I spent many years of my life spending every waking moment in some activity involving them, especially efforts to meet them.  I did end up meeting several of the band members, but never my idol, Richard Butler, even though I once nearly broke my neck trying to climb down the balconies at Radio City Music Hall to get near him, foiled only by the valiant efforts of my wisely-picked chaperone.

Many years have gone by since then, and this summer the Psychedelic Furs played along with a couple of other great 80’s bands, the Alarm and the Fixx, at Jenkinson’s in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, a small beach bar with a stage right in the middle of the dance floor.  I was feeling tired, grumpy and old, but my husband surprised me with tickets and when I got to the club I shed twenty years.  Before I knew it the Furs came on, and when they played my favorite song, “India,” I pushed my way through the crowd and got right up to the front of the stage.  Richard Butler held my hand as he sang, and I finally got to tell him I loved him after all these years.  (I mean it in a different way now, of course, and my husband is my hero for helping me fulfill one of my lifelong dreams.)

I really wish I had a time machine so I could go back to 1985 and tell the sad little girl I was back then that not only will her biggest wish come true someday but she will have a happy, blessed life.  And I am delighted to say that if I could do that, I could honestly reassure her that my heart hasn't grown old after all.

David said: Ah, long live the furs... I remember seeing Richard Butler now and then walking down St. Mark's street in NYC, where I believe he lived. The Furs represent a great time & place in music. (3/3/2008)
