Bus Tour of EuropeLOCATION: the Autobahn , Outside of HeidelburgYEAR: 1985TAGS: Phil Collins, Europe, tour buses, the AutobahnPUBLISHED: March 3, 2008In the town I grew up in if you went to public school you were raised dreaming about the day when you'd get to go to Europe with the high school band and choir. Every social event in town was a fundraiser for this bi-annual trip, and every kid joined the band or choir in fourth grade in anticipation of the day you'd get to see the capitals of Europe. 1985 was the year I got to go, and it was the very last trip of its kind because the band and choir teachers that organized the whole thing retired in 1986. Our group took up 3 tour buses and there was a lot of highway driving in between cities and shows. Our bus driver allowed us to pick the music he played but the "cool kids" were only interested in playing this one album over and over again. I must have heard this song 110 times that summer. It was amazing seeing Europe for the first time on my own with 60 of my high school friends, and a great experience giving concerts in the Jardin des Tuileries and other European landmarks, but a lot of my memories of this trip involve the down time on the bus. We had singalongs, played games, and got to know each other over those long hours on the Autobahn and other European highways. This was one of the best times of my life, and even if I can't stand Phil Collins, hearing this song brings a smile to my face. Â
