NancyL | MEMORY FROM 1991

A Sign From God

LOCATION: Some Convention Center , Los Angeles

YEAR: 1991

TAGS: Talking Heads, "Once In A Lifetime", Los Angeles, trade shows, SMPTE

PUBLISHED: February 27, 2008

This is a kind of weird memory that only true music fans will understand, but one I hold close to my heart. In 1991 I was working a trade show in Los Angeles. I was homesick and depressed and mad at my boss-- just feeling kind of dejected all around.

One morning the boss told me to show up at our booth early to put together some press releases. The trade show was for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and featured tons of cool video and audio equipment. I walked onto the dark show floor with my head hanging low, but the very second I stepped foot in there the lights went up and this amazing wall-of-sound stereo system turned itself on. It was playing the Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime."

Rationally I know that it was just some hidden techie testing out his equipment, but back then I used to say that music was my religion and I took it as a sign from God-- everything was going to be all right and I should just relax and try to enjoy myself. Hearing such a great song blasted from an out-of-this-world stereo system put a smile on my face, and I really enjoyed myself the rest of the trip.

Some people feel the presence of God in a rainbow or a majestic review, but I felt it from the music.   I still remember that holy feeling I got whenver I hear this song.
