Kindergarten and Peg

LOCATION: Kindergarten class, Cincinnati

YEAR: 1980

TAGS: Steely Dan, Peg, 5

PUBLISHED: February 11, 2008

Whenever I hear the song, "Peg," I'm instantly zapped back to watching Sesame Street on PBS, and my vacant, food-hoarding Kindergarten teacher who baby-sat us five year olds until our parents finally picked us up.

In 1980, I didn't realize who Steely Dan was yet, but I knew I liked their song, "Smile for the Camera," otherwise known by its actual song title, "Peg." One morning, "Peg" came on right after Sesame Street went off.  In between show airings, PBS always did a station identification with a song playing, usually something warm, fuzzy and AM radio-like.  My teacher's name was "Big Ms. Williams," a stout woman named as such because there was another kindergarten teacher named Williams who was half her size. Big Ms Williams was kind of elderly and she had no patience for a roomful of five-year-olds.  Sesame Street and Electric Company babysat us while she read Harlequin novels and snuck and ate uncooked cookie dough she had hidden in her purse, and whenever I hear "Peg," I think of Sesame Street and Big Ms. Williams.
