So that I can feel the rainLOCATION: Route 66, New MexicoYEAR: 2003TAGS: dave matthews, roadtripsPUBLISHED: January 12, 2008I had about a week to get from Utah to Florida to start a new job. I took the 'long way' and so I ended up spending hour after hour on the back roads of the desert. Maybe it was the irony of the place itself - a place that never has rain, and can barely sustain life, yet so incredibly beautiful. When the rain does come there, it is a welcome blessing, a gift from above, providing life to the land.
As Dave would belt out his story about life and death, and as miles and miles of endless 2-lane road was conquered, I would imagine myself, lying there, old and dead, in my own little shallow grave. I would imagine an eloquent letter to whoever was in charge of my funeral to please make it so I could still feel the rain. Purposefully close enough so that the very thing that had provided me life, would now take away the final traces of my very being. Why Dave wrote this song I don't know exactly, but what a creative way to express himself - as a plea to the person who will dig his very own grave.
