All the tired horses...and tired Bob DylansLOCATION: Grateful Dead Show, Highgate, VermontYEAR: 1997TAGS: Bob Dylan, Grateful DeadPUBLISHED: January 8, 2008Now, my memory is starting to fail me, so forgive me if I got which show this was wrong.
It was supposedly the last time the Grateful Dead would ever play in Vermont, and so of course I went to it. I was way too young to really understand the Dead, and of course I was like 13, so I was way too 'grounded' to understand the show, but I do remember my first introduction to Bob Dylan. He opened for the Dead that night, well, rather, I would say he partied with the Dead that night, and then came out to 'play'. I can still imagine him passing the joint, grabbing a sip of water and strolling out to the stage. Well, the man was so messed up, they had to bring a chair for him. It was still good, but I remember thinking, this guy does not look well. He looks tired, like the horses in his song.... Jerry Garcia would die a few years later, mainly from hard living, and I think that was about the time Bob cleaned himself up a bit. Not to say it was a bad show, it was just painfully evident the toll that a life on the road had had on Bob. What a great musician, however.
