I get a call from a drummer friend: "Do you want to do a gig on Sunday?" "Yes!" Simple as that. The only issue being we (drummer, guitarist and myself on bass) had only played together in a rehearsal room once, and that was only for about an hour and half, and now we were going to play forty-five minutes to a pub full of strangers, in Bondi. So we had no material, I wanted to play keys and we didn't have a singer. Yet, in just over 24 hours the band was engaged in a proper rehearsal. We had a singer. We even had the luxury of a horn section. But no fixed bass player, so we all swapped around on that one. When the singer and the horns had buggered off home, us in the rhythm section started to jam. My guitarist chum began playing the Who Knows riff. Infectious. The Band of Gyspys era had completely passed me by. I thought it was yet another Hendrix live album cashing in on the axeman's legacy. We played a slowed-down instrumental version of this tune live and following the show, I couldn't get the riff out of my head. And still can't. I finally bought the Band of Gyspys LP around new year time this year, which seems appropriate, as the recording is from a new year's gig from yesteryear. http://www.you tube.com/watch?v=N5M1Qs25cP4 < /p>
