Crying Over GoldLOCATION: Living room , Sussex, UKYEAR: 2001TAGS: Bob Harris, Janice Long, BBC, Radio 2, cantankerousPUBLISHED: February 14, 2008Veteran UK DJ “Whistling” Bob Harris has a lot to answer for. But in a good way. He turned me on to Tim Buckley, Little Feat and Sparks via his Old Grey Whistle Test reruns show. And on BBC Radio 2, he introduced me to Ryan Adams. Can’t remember what tracks he played now, but I know it was from Gold. And then I heard another bastion of British broadcasting, Janice Long, play Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard and announce that Gold was or will be one of the albums of the year. I had to buy it. But I was overcome by a charitable mood and bought the CD for my brother as a birthday present. It was an opportunity to introduce him to something different, with the knowledge that if he didn’t like it, he could give the album straight to me. But he did love it. So I had to buy my own copy (although technically I had bought it in the first place). I can’t remember the first time I heard La Cienega Just Smiled, but I do know that it made me cry. And it has done every time I’ve heard it since. I once played the song to a colleague, albeit one with different musical taste, who really couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. But then I read that it was one of Bob Harris’ favourite tunes and it made me thank him again. Just a shame Ryan Adams is a cantankerous old bastard on stage.
