The Midway

LOCATION: Alameda County Fairgrounds , Pleasanton

YEAR: 1991

TAGS: Ozzy, Fairs, Carnival Midway

PUBLISHED: March 3, 2008

Every year about a week or so after school would let out, the fair would come to town. My memories of the fair could probably fill an entire book. These memories range from elementary school age trips with the family, to my first trips with friends throughout junior high, and in high school, with my husband, and all the way up to my kids first trip to that same fair. There are a number of songs that resurrect different memories of those trips for me, but this song is forever associated with the county fair to me.

Growing up, it was common knowledge that the carnies who ran the midway rides were rockers. From my earliest memories the music coming out of the loudspeakers for most rides was rock, mainly Ozzy. My favorite ride was the swings. Nothing compared to flying high above midway, the wind flowing through your hair, the smell of cotton candy & popcorn tinging the air. If it was right about dusk when you got on the swings, you could watch the sun start to sink below the horizon, and the carnival lights would come on, setting the midway aglow.

This song particularly always reminds me of that feeling. A kid with the whole summer ahead of you and not a care in the world. Just the sights & smells of a summer midway, with Ozzy filling the night with sound.
