Meghan | MEMORY FROM 1984 That's LifeLOCATION: My house , LivermoreYEAR: 1984TAGS: Grandpa, SinatraPUBLISHED: February 18, 2008My Grandpa was one of the greatest influences on my life. He was a singer and the funnest Grandpa you could ever imagine. He grew up in New York, and sometimes when he'd get riled up his California non-accent would drop, and his true New York tongue would take over. He sang all the time, and was always coming up with ways to make us kids laugh. He told me unicorns were real, and that I could be anything I wanted to be. He bought me my first typewriter when I was 7. Obviously he had plans for me at an early age. My memories of him are all warm and tender ones. He was a wonderful man, who instilled in me pride in my heritage (Irish of course) and pride in myself. He was Irish & a Democrat. Two things I'm very proud to be as well. My Grandpa's main style of music was barbershop. He performed often, and always had a couple of local groups over at the house during holidays and stuff. My grandparents house was always full of music. He died in 1991. I was still just a kid. He would have loved my husband, and he would've loved his great-grandkids. I have a recording of a show he did when I was a little girl. He performed Sinatra's That's Life. Whenever I feel a little lost, or when life is just getting me down, I pull out that recording. Instantly I can feel my Grandpa reminding me magic is real, I can do anything, and that life can't keep a good Irishman down.
