My BFF and I had an ongoing debate in regards to this tragic ballad of a cheating lover. We would analyze this over and over. I feel pretty confident what the red was that Jani Lane saw after opening that door. I assumed it meant red as in anger. Relating the color to the emotion. Simple lyrical technique.

Now my BFF remained convinced (though we haven't discussed it in close to 20 years, I'm sure she still does) that Jani Lane's "character" in the song sees Red from blood. The blood that spilled after he killed them. She swore that she heard him say it in an interview.

I never saw this interview, and I still don't think that the song was about a man killing his girlfriend and her lover. I will always stand by my theory that Jani seeing Red was simply a figure of speech. Like "green' with envy, or "blue" in the face.

This debate carried on so fiercely that it took away from the simple pleasure of a pretty tune. This is the first time I've listened to it in ages, and just listened to nice ballad. Without trying to analyze the lyrics.
