One night some friends & I went to a party in nearby Danville. Danville, and the surrounding area is a pretty rich community. Definitely not our usual hang out. A friend's coworker invited us to a going away party for a good friend of his. This guy had recently graduated college and had scored himself a pretty sweet job with the fledgling FOX sports network. He was leaving for LA the next day. The only person we knew at this party was, our friend's coworker. The rest of the people there were complete strangers.

What made this party so strange is that these were college folks. Not just any college people, but a lot of people going to UCSF and Stanford. Future doctors and lawyers, a pretty far cry from the people we usually hung out with. It was a strange atmosphere, and to say we felt a little out of place would be putting it mildly. When we were introduced to the guy whose going away party this was, I was immediately taken by him.

He was handsome, rich, and was completely high off the fact he had just scored his dream job. In spite of his excitement, there was also a melancholy air about him. I noticed him sitting alone a lot of the time, and not really socializing. The moment I saw an opportunity to strike up a conversation with him, I did.

He was actually quite sweet, and was curious as to how I ended up at his going away party. Then he asked me if I'd ever been to Disneyland. Of course I had, so I said yes. He asked if I liked movies, Disney in particular and I said yes. We snuck off to his room down the hall, where he started showing me his collection of box sets and movie scores (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ET,) this Classic Disney Box Set was what he put in the stereo.

When a couple of his friends started hanging out in the doorway and making snide remarks about him and I alone in his room, he rolled his eyes and shut the door on them. I spent the rest of the night in that room listening to movie scores and almost this entire Disney box set with him.

He had this thing for movie scores, because it combined the two most amazing mediums, music & film. He talked about his favorites. He also pulled out pictures of the girlfriend he was leaving behind for this dream job. They had decided against a long distance relationship, but he still loved her. He even questioned if leaving her was the right choice. They both loved Disney movies and if I recall it was this song from Cinderella that he said was "their song".

He also asked about me, and what I wanted to do with my life. He told me that men were jerks, and that when I grew up I should never ever settle for anything less than what I deserved. He talked to me like I was a little girl. I was 16, and at the time I didn't see myself as a little girl. Looking back, I know now that I was so very young. This guy saw that. He never once tried anything on me, or made a pass or anything. He just wanted to tell someone that he was scared. Something he felt he couldn't share with his friends.

We never exchanged phone numbers or anything. I never saw the guy again. But for about a week after that night I walked around feeling like a princess. I got to spend an evening with a true prince.

And I suppose it's the fact he loves Disney that he actually acts like a gentleman! So thank Disney! (3/13/2008)
