One theory of intimacy states that it is based on shared values. Every summer a group of friends and I would rent a ski house for the summer.  We all wanted the welcome break from the city heat and to stretch out in a home after our norm of cramped apartment dwelling.  Our common cause was a sincere desire to have fun.

The actual house was different each time, but one memorable year we lucked onto an old mansion.  It had a grand staircase with a motorized seat and a back stairs that led into strange passageways where each and every one of us got lost at least once.  My second floor room had windows on three sides and one glorious weekend of overgrown lilac bushes blooming at each of them, pouring their scent in through the curtains ruffling in the breeze. The living room was incredible, but our best times were probably in the dining room – bay window, wood paneling, and a table big enough for all our assorted friends and lovers.

The core group of friends had eaten together many times before, and we all had our usual chores (setting, clearing, cooking, washing, drying, etc.). This night, someone had brought a new girlfriend and as we rose from a fabulous dinner with more than the usual amount of wine she asked, shyly, “Where do all these dishes go?” We spontaneously broke out into a rousing rendition of “Over there, Over there”, pointing towards the kitchen and tramping out in perfect time as we did the fastest cleanup, or anyway the cleanup we enjoyed the most, all summer. George M. Cohan wrote a song that expressed a shared desire to get the job done. I wish so much that we could find the same sense of shared values and common purpose, and a song to express it today.
