Dress RehearsalLOCATION: Central Park, NY, NYYEAR: 1991TAGS: south africa, grace, rehearsal, joy, ladysmith black mombaza, apartheid, picnic, central parkPUBLISHED: February 1, 2008Being a real New Yorker, I didn’t want to brave the crowds for Paul Simon’s concert in Central Park, but I wanted to hear him anyway. Being a New Yorker, I knew that there would be a sound check the night before, and I showed up complete with beach chairs, picnic, blankets and friends. Paul Simon was NOT glad to see us, and used barely half his voice. He was a professional, just not into playing to a very sparse crowd of late afternoon park saunterers.
LadySmith Black Mombazo on the other hand was VERY glad to see us, and sang out with enthusiasm and joy. They gave some crowd-shy but music-loving New Yorker’s a real treat. We were politically correct, aware that all things South African were under pressure because of apartheid, and very ignorant about African music. It was a revelation to hear their unique vocal style and a joy to share in their joy in making music.
That night gave me the courage to take a job in South Africa when it was offered many years later. Music is one of the best ways to eliminate barriers between cultures, between races, amongst religions, and between people. Anyone who has ever heard LadySmith Black Mombazo sing knows that South Africa has produced people who love music, love other people, and want to share that love and joy with the rest of us. It was a great night, and my short time working there was enriched because I knew to listen for the sounds.
