The Young HostessLOCATION: The Kitchen , DCYEAR: 2008TAGS: dancing, dinnerPUBLISHED: May 7, 2008When I was scrounging about college in sweatpants, I saw a picture of Jacqueline Kennedy lighting a candle at the dinner table. The caption read, “The young hostess prepares to entertain her guests.” And I thought, “Isn’t that a lovely bit of life! She has guests!” Married now, with tiny flickering bits of light on the tiny kitchen table and the third-hand buffet server, my husband of several months watched me arrange the deviled eggs. The electronic folder marked "Dinner Music" delivered Sinatra, Buffett, and Buble from the living room. And Ella. He took my hand, leading me away from the wine and the tortilla chips. I glanced over his shoulder at the clock that needed straightening, the bit of dust on the stairwell-- it wasn't ready yet. Nothing was ready. I buried my head against him. It was twenty after nine. They weren't coming. I knew it; they weren't coming. I burrowed. His cell phone shook to life. Directions. Two cars shot right past our place. I placed a hand against my chest and went for the clock, pulling it one millimeter to the right. They were coming. The carrot dip-- that had to come out of the fridge. But first, the dance.
