Hootie shall always be college to me-- the indie guitar sound, the muttered lyrics, the fact that this one popped up on the Friends soundtrack. It was originally heard on my uncle's stereo at the family Christmas party, the volume at 1, six blonde heads bent near the speakers to catch subjects and subtexts we judged inappropriate for the ears of our 85 year old grandfather.

Every now and then I'll catch a rerun of Friends as I surf past, and watch in fascination: The hair, the references, the slow descent over the shark. While a few Matthew Perry bot mots have held up well, at other times I cringe into the crack of the couch: What was I thinking, crowning this one of the funniest sitcoms I'd ever seen? Fake, fake, faaaaaake!

The I realized: The humor had Tupperwared the late '90's, exactly the moment in my life when I was making a significant shift from childhood to advanced adolescence. The characters were maybe four years older than I was (if not the actors), and so I looked to them for how to conduct early adulthood activities. Now, married and fully in my 30's, I look back with pity and alarm: A "hand twin," seriously? Letting a wedding get all the way to the altar before calling it off? Letting Hank Azaria go in favor of King Abercrombie?

You can't go home, or to your ridiculously large apartment in Manhattan, again. Maybe one of these days I'll hit the DVD's of the series for the extras, but for now, I'd love to see how an early-40's Phoebe is pulling off a cute coffee song riff about a smelly cat.
