Third time lucky

When I used to watch a TV show with music videos on regularly, I first encountered Wendy Matthews. At the time, I was not extremely impressed. She seemed to be just another female performer with a good voice and an average song. There were many other bands I much preferred in the charts at the time, and I tended to use the less favored songs as a time to fix my son's breakfast or perhaps my own coffee. For this reason, I did not catch much of her videos, though I caught the entire sound performance.

A year or so later, when relaxing and chatting to my former American lover, he happened to mention he liked her music. Wondering what he found to be so special, I gave her work a second chance and began to listen with more attention to her performances. I was still not particularly impressed, but the song playing on radio that started our conversation at that time is still stuck in my mind when I recall him.

It was a case of third time lucky, for the next encounter I had with Wendy Matthews was when she appeared live at a festival in Hyde Park, not long after my son and I had moved to the Sydney suburbs. Feeling it a good chance to catch a famous performance live, I made sure we caught a couple of Wendy's songs, just after my son had watched a play school performer from my childhood sing a few children's pieces and before we had lunch and checked out Past II Present. This time, when I heard that same song, it did touch me inside. I am not sure if it was hearing it live, it now being a familiar track, or perhaps my tastes had adapted towards those of my partner, but for some reason I finally appreciated the song.
