The shops did not have it

I think I must be one of the few people that associate Rick Dees with a certain miscellaneous hit from history, more than with his top 40 radio show. The majority of people seem to have forgotten about Disco Duck, and just recognize Rick as a host with knowledge and humor. For several years I tuned in to his weekly top 40 show, until the music continually increased with the type I had no interest in. I then gave up following the charts.

When I listened to this show, I had no idea he had once been a one-hit-wonder pop star, but the song was mentioned on one occasion and hearing a snatch of the tune I was determined to investigate. It sounded like I might like the song. My usual routine was to visit the second hand record stores in either Sydney or Melbourne. This usually turned up those treasures from the past that the shops of today frowned upon or ignored. I did not find the song, however.

I tried to find it in around six stores before giving up. It was due to a former partner, who telephoned to catch up with me one evening, that I finally got a copy of the song. He had it on disc and somehow or other the conversation turned to Disco Duck. He promised to mail me a cassette copy, and if I liked it he would forward the disc.

My son had recently started up an interest in feeding the geese and ducks at the local pond, and he instantly took up the song and started to sing along. He sang it every time we walked down the road to feed the waterfowl for a few weeks. As my music taste has split from the charts, my recollection of Rick Dees has centered more on this song.
