Shortly after having left the local comprehensive school due to social problems, and having transferred to a C of E high school for girls only in a nearby town, I began to regain an interest in music. For a few years, nothing had really taken to my heart and I had found more fun in ringing church bells and handbells than in listening to recorded music. I had also dabbled in tunes from the era of my parent's youth for a short time. Finally, I began to tune in to modern popular music again.

Once settled into the new school, I used to spend my lunch period in the typing hut. One of the other classes in my year dwelt there, and I seemed to relate better to that group than my own class. They would invariably have a radio playing and I took affectionately to two of the songs I often heard. What's in a Kiss was one of these.

We used to doodle in love hearts, discuss boys and music, and other teenage female passtimes, but it was the music that stood out mostly for me. I recall one specific occasion where a couple of lads from the boys only school dared to walk through the girls only school grounds. I do not know if they were caught or not, but the typing hut was on the edge and one of the first places they passed. Naturally, the event heralded some reaction from us. We opened a window and started singing this song, along with blowing kisses to the young men as they strolled by. It was one of the more amusing of my memories from a mostly miserable school life.
