The last day, hip hip hooray!

I did not enjoy my schooldays. From the first tears of being forced to remain in a large room filled with other children rather than accompanying my mother on her chores and cycling excursions, through to the last few days of attending high school to take exams, school was nothing more than boring, irrelevant, miserable, or even dangerous. I liked learning but I did not like doing so in the environment of a school.

My second and third years of high school were the worst. I became the bullies target on a daily basis and I rarely came home without at least one new bruise or blemish caused by a cruel fellow student. It got so bad, that I eventually refused to attend. I simply would not go to school. Social workers and child psychologists were attending my 'problem' once they learned of the reason for my extended absence. In the end, I was transferred to a different school where I was much happier, though I still did not feel pleasure at having to attend and have always found that I learned more from reading books at home.

By the time I was in my final year, I was investigating 1970's music. The 70's had only just stopped, but I was only just starting my interest. I was eagerly awaiting release from my schooldays, so naturally the song School's Out hit my heart and soon became a firm favorite to sing along with. Although the last school was the best, I can recall joyfully singing this song on my way to catch the train home on my very last day. That was a very long time ago now; my son finishes his own schooldays this week.
