madeliaette | MEMORY FROM 1974 Our Record PlayerLOCATION: home, SussexYEAR: 1974TAGS: childhood, recordsPUBLISHED: February 13, 2008Other than my parents singing, television, and radio, I grew up to the age of seven or eight before my parents introduced an alternative method of playing music within our home. In these days of DVD players, CD players, iPods, and tune-playing cell phones, this may be hard to consider. It was extremely exiting when my parents went to the local town and entered a strange shop, informing me that we were going to buy a record-player. I had no idea what such a thing was. Once I had questioned my parents, I discovered that songs and pieces of music would come out of this machine, just like the television, except there would be no pictures. After some pestering, my parents agreed to buy me some of the special discs that you put into this new machine we were about to purchase. I had no idea what was available and did not particularly like any song from radio or television, so let my parents select a few records for me. One of these was the Rolf Harris single Two Little Boys. On arrival at home, my father set up our new contraption and I proceeded to demand to play my new treasure first. Because it was the first ever song that I myself owned, and the first song I ever heard on the brand new turntable, this particular song stood out in my memory more than any other from my early discs. It was a long time ago in England, where I no longer live, that I first heard the song. I have since seen Rolf Harris in real life and repurchased some childhood music memories, including this special memory.
