madeliaette | MEMORY FROM 1989

I was just listening to his music

LOCATION: The second home , South Australia

YEAR: 1989

TAGS: room share, jealousy

PUBLISHED: March 12, 2008

My original ex and I had just been thrown out of our initial accommodation, due to the owner of the room share home blaming us for the behavior of my ex's friend. He had come to dinner one evening, and shortly after the marijuana crop and some silver had vanished from the house. He was the likely candidate and so we were asked to leave.

My ex located another room share the other side of town, which we moved into directly. This house had another tenant as well as us. It was my ex's ritual to spend two or three hours at his parent's home each evening, primarily to dine. I would spend my time watching TV or singing whilst playing his acoustic guitar. On occasion, I might wander into the lounge where the other tenant was generally playing his favored music at a high volume. One of the songs he constantly played was Phil Collins' Two Hearts. I did not specifically like the song, though it did offer lyrics I could explore and was not something I screwed up my face or folded my ear flaps inwards to.

On one occasion, I recall my ex lurking about outside, jealously listening in. He then took me to our room, informing me he had stood around outside for some time - seemingly oblivious to the fact that should he have wished, he could have shared that time with me by coming indoors. He accused me of paying too much attention to the other resident, merely for having chatted and listened to some music together. I was informed that the other tenant was only playing the music to lure me into his room, and the whole jealous husband act progressed until I rarely did hang in the lounge. I could still hear this song amongst selected music from my room though.

These days, the song holds mostly memories of those miserable times. However, I may sometimes push these aside and enjoy the lyrics. Any songs I associate with my ex tend to leave a somewhat bitter taste though.
