I don't want to breathe any longer

LOCATION: home , Elizabeth, South Australia

YEAR: 1994

When this song first came onto the music video program that I used to watch every single week, I was going through a few problems with my partner. It was not that we did not love each other, or even that we did not respect, admire, cherish, or care; it was simply that he lived the other side of the planet from me. From time to time, this became a problem.

These days, it does not matter that my lover lives in America, whilst I dwell in Australia. We have many forms of communication open to us and are not just reliant upon love, letters, and exceedingly expensive telephone calls. At the time the song started to play regularly, I was missing my man though. I found the lyrics explained my feelings if I had to wait an extra week before speaking, or if an expected letter or card was delayed. It mattered a lot to me and I felt so miserable whilst waiting, that I felt I could not breathe. I would become anxious, in case he had dropped me. These times made me almost literally lose my breath and collapse uncaring or unwilling to continue. I just wanted to cry my way out of life and stop breathing permanantly, so the song meant much to me at this time.

I have to mention that I was somewhat stressed at the time; also, I was much younger than I am today. Nowadays, I would just wait or send an email. I did not have a computer then, nor the very useful '$6 cap plan' for three-hour phone calls to the States!
