I do not need that much money

LOCATION: my mind , Wollongong,

TAGS: money

PUBLISHED: April 27, 2008

I agree with the attitude of the lyrics, I do not wish to become a millionaire. Whilst most people in my generation work their butts off to progress themselves in monetary value, I plod easily through my workday trying to enjoy a profitable life, rather than fat wallet. There are, of course, some times when I need more money than others, but these are not arising as often as it seems they do for most other people around me.

The first time I wanted more money than just covering my rent, bills and food, was when saving to vacation down under in Australia. I was a trainee nurse at the time, and thought it would take me forever to save the thousand or so English pounds needed. Nevertheless, the money in my account grew until I had sufficient, if helped along by a clerical error that had deposited an extra $300 into my account. Once in, being their mistake and not mine, I was legally entitled to keep the 'bonus' money.

I did not need extra money again until I became pregnant and wanted to offer my son the best of lives. I soon learned, at this time, that this could come from love and music, security and happiness. It did not need to originate from fancy clothing, toys, gadgetry, and special vacations. I did not really need the extra cash after all.

Now, I still do not want to own a million dollars; however, I would like three or four times as much as the $700 that is currently sitting in my savings account. Just two or three thousand would satisfy me, as this would offer me the funds for a much-desired American vacation. I have not yet even met my best friend who lives in NYC, and I am desperate to hear my favorite bands from San Francisco play live concerts, as well as needing to meet up with my Californian partner. I doubt that I will need to increase my funds again afterwards until retirement other than for more of such US holidays, and this will be accomplished simply by inheriting the family home in England. Therefore, when hearing the song - which was mentioned in a book that I was reading and hence brought recently to mind - I can safely say that I do not want to become a millionaire.
