I did not give up

I did not watch the TV show Starsky and Hutch, despite its growing popularity in the mid 70's. It was not appropriate for my age group according to my parents, when they were questioned as to why my friend watched it but I could not. My best friend of the time was quite obsessed with David Soul who played a role in the series.

Unable to watch the TV show, I was not at a loss for likewise indulging myself in her interest. David Soul brought out a couple of hit songs and my mother was not opposed to my purchasing a copy of Don't Give Up On Us. I really enjoyed the song and it held me involved with my best friend's interests, which were seemingly otherwise banned from my participation.

Weeks later, in needlework class, we were told to create an idea to sew onto a bookmark. I wanted to continue my interest and decided that although I was forbidden to watch the show, I would like my bookmark to relate to it. I therefore asked to have 'S and H' printed onto my slip of material in preparation to embroider over the marking. Unfortunately, the teacher mistook my request for my initials of S and H, leaving out the word 'and' - along with criticizing my idea as being rather plain and unadventurous. I seem to connect the song with the bookmark in my recollections for I did not give up and promptly sewed my bookmark. Once cued to create another bookmark - for the first had been completed so fast - I properly explained my new design and finally got the bookmark I had wanted all along.
