During my childhood, much of the music I heard was enjoyable. Some of the songs were happy; some songs made me want to dance; some tunes made me happy when I heard my relatives sing along. One song I was rather fed up with was Doggie in the Window. I seemed to hear it continuously. It was just one of those songs that would not leave me alone. Whatever I did, wherever I went, that song seemed to crop up.

The first time I can recall hearing it was on TV. I watched a lot of TV in my childhood, and I no longer can recall exactly which show I was watching. The tune stood out neither as good or as bad. I might not have thought of it, had not I heard a relative singing it shortly afterwards. Not long after that, it appeared on a compilation record one of my parents purchased and played sometimes. That was not the last I heard of it either.

Within the next decade, I had heard it on TV a few more times, it had become a regular song in a relative's repertoire, and I had heard it sung in a school assembly play. That was still not the last I heard of the song. I frequented numerous second hand record stores in my twenties and came across the title a few times in such situations. I searched for a piece of sheet music for a Richard Marx song once, and what should I find but Doggie in the Window. It popped up on radio a couple of times, too. I am not sure which songs my son will consider as heard everywhere and every when when he grows older, but this song is top of my list for such!
