madeliaette | MEMORY FROM 1988

He just called to say what he did not mean

LOCATION: my parent's home , Sussex

YEAR: 1988

TAGS: misery, phone call, lies

PUBLISHED: March 5, 2008

This song brings another of my bad-feeling memories to the surface of my mind. I had moved out of my parent's home shortly after my twenty-first. I had moved into the nurses' quarters at a nearby city hospital. The two environments were completely opposite. One was an atmosphere of village life, Christianity, and family. The other, offered youth, a taste of city life and freedom - also many a raunchy party!

One of my goals had always been to leave England, to migrate to somewhere larger, warmer, and brighter. I had began to explore Australia as a possibility and started up a correspondence with a few pen friends. One of these suddenly telephoned unexpectedly. By the end of the phone call, we were engaged. This left me somewhat bewildered, optimistic, but rather concerned about how to inform my parents.

I made plans, quit my training, and moved home to my parent's for a few weeks. The pen pal suddenly cut all communication with me, stranding me jobless at my parent's, devastated. Being a feisty young lady, I wrote a rather rude letter to the man, telling him just what I thought of him. I then proceeded to continue with my vacation plans, arranging to stay with another friend in Australia instead.

Days before my flight, the pen pal resurfaced with a phone call. He played this song down the line to me and then sang some of it himself. After a pile of apologies on his part, I agreed to meet him whilst on my up-coming trip. I was no longer sure I wanted to marry him though. As it turned out, I did marry him, but the marriage was a terrible mistake and did not even last two years. He had lied when he said he loved me, but I had been too inexperienced in such matters to know until I learned the hard way.

Now, when I hear this song, I shudder. When I was given such words down the telephone, they were just a pack of lies. It occasionally makes me wonder just how many people do fall for a song and believe that lie
