Before school each day, my friend Gillian would arrive to spend a little time with me. My mother was not always as happy to see her as I, for Gillian tended to arrive very early in the morning, sometimes as early as 7am or even earlier. I was usually still in bed or eating breakfast, and my mother shooed her away like a pestering cat until an appropriate time.

When she was allowed to visit, we would hang in the lounge playing vinyls, or we would be in my bedroom making books out of paper with crayons and pencils. I do not recall all of the songs we used to play, but I do remember I had a copy of Bridge Over Troubled Water, which we often danced to before school.

I can recall how this was the first time I ever really danced to music, and the first time I ever danced with my friends around. My parents had previously played radio, and music on tv, but it was not until we obtained our record player and I was able to buy some vinyls that I liked that I truly let loose.

Comparing those innocent days to my dancing techniques of today, it amuses me to think of how we used to simply sway or take a few steps and swirls and call it dancing. These days I am far more involved with what my arms and hands are doing, the position of my legs and head, my clothing and image, etc. Back then, we simply moved in time to the sounds we heard and liked. Yet it was FUN!
