Family FunLOCATION: My Uncle's House, MarylandYEAR: 1987TAGS: michael, jackson, bad, smooth, criminalPUBLISHED: February 13, 2008Some of my most favorite moments in my life were when I was with my family. It was a great feeling being around parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even distant relatives on occasions. One memorable time was when my cousin Romeo celebrated his first birthday. I was four at the time, and I think everyone was there at my Uncle Romeo’s house. It was so much fun eating cake and ice cream (of course), playing toys with my cousins, and dancing to music.
Every get-together and party centered on music. We would play cassette tapes, turn on the radio, or turn on the television to hear music from various music videos. There was one point during Romeo’s birthday party when Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” came on. Since I was a die-hard fan at such a young age, of course I was dancing my butt off to the song. In my mind, I was visualizing the entire music video and acting it out through my energetic body. It was to the point where I thought I was doing the moves correctly, all the way down to the famous spin move and finger point when the song ended. Everyone was clapping and cheering for me, and I was giving them a show.
I still remember that moment to this day. Remember my comment stating how I thought I was doing the moves right? The video camera footage my Uncle Romeo caught showed me otherwise: nothing but a bunch of jumping up and down and waving my arms all over the place. At least I did the spin and finger point correctly.
