Let’s be honest. Jenny Lewis has always been too cute for anything too indie. She was on Mr. Belvedere for chrissakes. Add to that the fact that Rilo Kiley’s other founding member - guitarist Blake Sennett - played Joey “The Rat” Epstein on ABC’s Boy Meets World, and you’ve got a band just waiting to go pop. So when the majors came calling for Under the Blacklight, Lewis gobbed on the mascara, pulled down her bust line and sexed the hell out of it on this one. And thanks be to you Brother Warner. With a bass line so phunky it could be Franz Ferdinand doing Larry Graham and a wiry little guitar lick that’s as dirrty as Christina used to be, this is some of Rob Zombie’s American Made Music To Strip By. Like an old American standard, the best line’s in the bridge: “And deep in my hands/I will if you want me to.”
