The Year of Exams

I had been writing tests, handing in assignments and other projects during my first four years of high school but I never really understood the importance of sitting for an examination recognized the world over. Perhaps this is why the first few months of my O-level year were rather smooth sailing.

It was in 2002 that I sat for my Ordinary Level Cambridge examinations acknowledged internationally. Throughout the year I had been optimistic, expecting nothing but the best. Of course I knew I had to work hard but my social life remained uncompromised. I still attended parties, braai functions, ice-cream treats and endless movie outings with my friends as was the norm.

As they say ‘time goes by quickly when you are having fun’ and indeed time flew. The year went by quickly and before I knew it, we were in the final term of school. I suppose that is when the reality of my exams began to sink. By the time we left for study break, I was even more nervous and restless.

I have never been one to take pills so I immediately dismissed the idea of taking sleeping tablets like most of my other stream mates. But I still needed something to calm my nerves without jeopardizing my general health. Music, as usual was my number one resort. This time, I needed something with a bang. Nelly Furtado’s ‘I’m Like a Bird’ worked wonders during this determining moment in my life.

The song took me to another time and place. I really felt like a bird- completely free and on top of the world. Whenever I needed uplifting this song just did the trick. Above all the song inspired me to pass with flying colors so I could really be high up in the air.
