She Just Had To Sing!!

LOCATION: Venekera Works , Harare

YEAR: 2005

PUBLISHED: March 18, 2008

I had my first work experience at the age of eighteen. My mother had paid me to do general household chores when I was younger but formally I got exposed to the real deal in September 2005. I found out about the job by browsing through a copy of the daily press a few days before the interview so there was very little time to prepare.

I therefore, spent the day compiling my resume, getting my hair done and polishing up responses to common interview questions. For the first time in months I went to bed early. I could not afford to look lethargic on the big day. I was up and about the following morning ready for what lay ahead though I felt jittery. After having my morning glass of fruit juice and cornflakes I went to the bus station. By 7.45 a,m. I had arrived and on arrival I found quite a number of prospective candidates already waiting to go in.

There were young applicants, middle aged applicants, intimidating applicants and naïve, inexperienced applicants. I probably fell into the last league of candididates. I grabbed a chair and  awaited my turn patiently. Standing out is something every applicant seeks but I believe this should be in a positive way. One of the female applicants began singing while in the boardroom.

‘What is all this about’?, seemed to be everyone’s question. After all it was a web design company so it was a bit puzzling as to how the singing would have been appropriate. She sang the worlds greatest. I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt when she came out but how could I when I was the one employed in the end?.
