Of Singers and WannabesLOCATION: Living Room , HarareYEAR: 2008TAGS: Idols, Channels, Entertainment, Channel O, MTV, AfricanPUBLISHED: April 24, 2008In addition to watching local programs aired on Zimbabwe Television (ZTV), my family and I are subscribers of DSTV featuring over 50 fascinating channels. As if this is not enough my sisters and I occasionally meander to a nearby DVD club for more entertainment. But I spend most of my free time browsing the DSTV channels. Given a whole day to myself, I would watch CNN for News, TBN for some spiritual growth and here is the best one of them all I would listen to music.
I am familiar with channel O, MTV and all the audio channels from rock to classical. Anyway back to the big screen, I am a huge fan of Idols, a program based on selecting the best singers through an audition process. I particularly enjoy Idols West Africa, which targets aspiring African singers. There is always a mixed bag of auditioners each with his own tactic. Overall, a great number of the participants sing eloquently and have what it takes but there are always exceptions.
One can not help but wonder why certain individuals bother in the first place. I can safely give all candidates credit for their dressing which is always immaculate, but since singing is really the name of the game, some participants would be better off going on some fashion show. It is these candidates who are cast into a class of their own and made to sing R Kelly’s ‘I believe I can fly’. This song reminds me of these wannabe singers. After all I was one of them until I faced the harsh reality that I can not sing.
