It wasn’t just me alone but the people of my age group had been shielded too. Our parent’s, the school and society as a whole enforced rules that ensured we were protected from all the hatred out there. But as I grew up and with each passing year, I ended up seeing the world for what it really is. By the time I got to high school, my folks couldn’t fool me, no one could.
I was horrified when I began to see how ruthless the world could be. I became exposed to stories about teenagers who had fallen pregnant and had abortions, who filled their minds with crack, who watched pornographic movies and got up to all kinds of mischief. To think I was in the same league of youngsters seemed impossible to believe.
But I was not exposed to teenagers alone. I ended up reading stories of fathers raping their children, of mothers keeping such brutal acts private, of gospel singers embezzling funds and having extra-marital affairs, of people bewitching each other and spreading malicious gossip about their foes. My heart bled.
What had happened to the simple, loving world I had known all my life?, I pondered. I longed to regain the world I had always known and readily embraced. Eventually, I came to accept the harsh reality of the other side of the world. But I was committed to making a difference. Whilst by the grotto on a fine Sunday morning, I resolved to sing the lyrics ‘I saved the world today’.
