When I was writing for the paper aimed at high school students I wanted to do an interview with Brighton Rock but I wasn’t sure of whom to contact. The band was between management companies so I took the plunge and wrote the band. One day I picked up the phone and it was the vocalist, Gerald McGhee asking when I wanted to do the interview. We set it up for the next day.

That had to be one of the most laidback interviews I had ever done. McGhee was calling from a recording studio and I could hear the rest of the band in the background, sometimes yelling comments to me. Stevie Skreebs, the bass player, predicted that it would be Calgary and Boston playing for the Stanley Cup but Boston would take it. (Neither hockey team made it to the finals that year by the way.)

I enjoyed most of the interviews I did but that one stands in my memory because of the ease in obtaining it and the relaxed atmosphere. It was almost as if we were long time friends. The next time Brighton Rock came to Calgary though I couldn’t resist giving Skreebs a rough time about his prediction.
